One click: the AI reads the data plate and writes the model and serial number for you.
Photograph the label on a water heater, furnace, AC condenser or appliance. With one click on Generate, InspectorData puts the brand, model number, serial number, manufacture date and capacity into the comment, copied exactly as printed.
| Model No. | XE50T06ST45U1 |
| Serial No. | 2219A123456 |
| Manufacture Date | MAY 2019 |
| Capacity U.S. Gals. | 50 |
Short answer: yes, InspectorData can read a serial number from a photo. Put the data-plate photo on its finding, click Generate or Re-Generate, and the comment includes the model number, serial number, manufacture date and capacity exactly as printed. Unreadable characters become "?", and no number is ever invented.
Typing serial numbers is the slowest part of a mechanical section
Every inspector knows it: you crouch for the photo, then squint at it again at your desk.
Zooming and retyping
Long model and serial strings get copied one character at a time from a small, glare-prone photo.
One wrong character
An O typed as a 0 or a 1 as an I sends your client to the wrong recall or age lookup.
Every system, every report
Water heater, furnace, condenser, panel, dishwasher, range, refrigerator: it adds up on every job.
How it works
There is nothing new to learn. It runs from the same Generate / Re-Generate button you already use in Step 3, Build Report.
- 1. Photograph the label - with the InspectorData phone app, or upload it to the report.
- 2. Keep it on its finding - for example Plumbing > Water Heater or Heating > Furnace.
- 3. Click Generate or Re-Generate - the comment comes back with the brand, model, serial, date and capacity in it.
- 4. Glance and send - the photo sits right next to the text, so checking the numbers takes seconds.
| Serial No. (glare) | 21?9A123456 |
The rules it follows on every label
Built for report accuracy first. A wrong number in a report is worse than no number.
Copied exactly
Letters and digits are kept apart: O and 0, I and 1, S and 5, B and 8. Spaces and dashes stay where the label has them.
Never invented
It never completes or guesses a number. If a character can't be read, it writes "?" in its place.
The details that matter
Manufacture date and capacity or rating (gallons, BTU, tons, amps, volts) are included when the label prints them.
Silent when there's no label
Photos without a data plate get a normal comment, with no model or serial lines and no placeholder text.
Where inspectors use it
Any system with a manufacturer rating plate:
- Plumbing - water heaters (tank and tankless), water softeners.
- Heating and cooling - furnaces, boilers, AC condensers, heat pumps, air handlers.
- Electrical - panel and breaker labels, generators.
- Appliances - dishwashers, ranges, refrigerators, microwaves.
Clients get the model and serial they need for recalls, warranty registration and age estimates, without you typing a single character.
Built by a Certified Master Inspector
InspectorData is built by working inspectors. Before release we ran it on a real Rheem electric water heater label from an inspection and checked the model, serial, manufacture date and capacity it wrote against the photo, character by character. All four matched.
