A home inspection app that works the way you hold your phone

Turn your phone sideways and keep working. Left-handed inspectors get the camera buttons under their left thumb, and Build Report on Phone spreads out in landscape so you see your progress and every category at once. Portrait stays exactly as it was.

Build Report on Phone in landscape: 100 percent progress ring, Needs Review, Categories and Photos counts and cover photo on the left, inspection categories on the right Portrait & Landscape

What Changed in the Mobile App?

The short version, for anyone who holds a phone sideways on the job.

  • Left-handed camera: tip the phone to the right and Gallery and Report move to the left edge. Tip it left and nothing changes.
  • Landscape Build Report: progress, shortcuts and cover photo on the left, all categories on the right, scrolling on their own.
  • Landscape category page: subcategories down the left, condition buttons and comments on the right, Save & Close in the top bar.
  • iPhone ready: text stays the same size when you rotate, and nothing hides behind the camera cutout.
  • Portrait untouched: the portrait layout inspectors already use did not change.

Why Does Holding the Phone Sideways Matter?

Most wide shots of a roof, a panel or a room are taken in landscape. The app should not fight you when you do.

Buttons on the Wrong Side

A left-handed inspector who tips the phone the natural way ends up reaching across the screen for every photo, often with a flashlight or a ladder rail in the other hand.

Screens Built Only for Portrait

Turned sideways, a stacked layout leaves a sliver of room for the list you actually need. One category visible at a time slows the whole report down.

Text That Jumps in Size

On iPhone, text can grow when you rotate to landscape and stay oversized when you rotate back, pushing controls off the screen.

Camera screen tipped to the right: Gallery and Report buttons on the left edge, Menu, Flash, Comment and Details on the right

How Does the Left-Handed Camera Work?

The camera screen reads which way the phone is turned. Tip it to the right and the whole screen mirrors itself so your capture buttons are under your left thumb. Tip it to the left and you get the layout right-handed inspectors already know. There is no setting to find.

  • Gallery & Report on the Left - the two buttons you tap for every photo sit on the side your thumb is on.
  • Menu, Flash, Comment & Details on the Right - the rarely tapped controls move to the other edge.
  • Automatic - flips as you rotate, and flips back when you turn the phone the other way.
  • Right-Handed Layout Unchanged - tipping to the left gives exactly the layout you had before.

What Does Build Report Look Like in Landscape?

Build Report on Phone turns into a two-panel screen when you hold the phone sideways. Everything about the report sits in a narrow panel on the left, and every category you are writing sits on the right.

  • Progress at a Glance - completion ring with Needs Review, Categories and Photos counts, plus the Move shortcut.
  • Missing Comment & No Category - one tap to the photos that still need attention.
  • Cover Photo in View - the cover fills the spare space in the panel so you can see the report has one.
  • Every Category on the Right - the list scrolls on its own, all the way to + Add Category, while the left panel stays put.

How Do I Mark Conditions in Landscape?

Open any category and the subcategories run down the left while the condition buttons, photos and comments fill the rest of the screen.

Roof category in landscape: subcategories listed on the left, Inspected, Not Inspected, Not Present, Deficient and Not Included buttons with a roof photo and comment on the right

Subcategories on the Left

Tap Roof Covering Materials, Gutters & Downspouts or any other subcategory to jump straight to it. The list stays in place while you scroll.

Condition Buttons Full Width

Inspected, Not Inspected, Not Present, Deficient and Not Included spread across the screen, so each one is an easy target.

Save & Close Up Top

Back and Save & Close move into the top bar instead of a bottom bar, giving the page more room for photos and comments.

Designed in the Field by a Certified Master Inspector

These layouts came from using the app on real inspections: holding the phone sideways for wide shots, and watching a left-handed grip reach across the screen for every photo. Each change was tried on a live report before it shipped, and portrait was left exactly as inspectors already use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a home inspection app for left-handed inspectors?

Yes. In the InspectorData mobile app, tip your phone to the right in landscape and the camera screen mirrors itself: Gallery and Report move to the left edge under your left thumb, and Menu, Flash, Comment and Details move to the right. Tip it to the left and you get the standard right-handed layout.

Do I have to turn on a left-handed setting?

No. The app reads which way the phone is turned and switches automatically. There is nothing to set up.

Can I write my inspection report on my phone in landscape?

Yes. Build Report on Phone has a landscape layout. Your progress ring, Needs Review, Categories and Photos counts, Missing Comment and No Category shortcuts and the cover photo sit in a panel on the left, and all of your inspection categories fill the right side and scroll.

What does a category look like in landscape?

Subcategories such as Roof Covering Materials or Gutters and Downspouts are listed down the left. The Inspected, Not Inspected, Not Present, Deficient and Not Included buttons, photos and comments are on the right. Back and Save & Close move into the top bar so more of the screen is used for your work.

Does the portrait layout change?

No. Portrait works exactly as before. The landscape layouts only apply when the phone is turned sideways.

Does it work on iPhones with a notch or Dynamic Island?

Yes. In landscape the Build Report screens leave room for the iPhone camera cutout, so buttons and the cover photo are not hidden behind it, and text stays the same size when you rotate between portrait and landscape.

Is this included in my plan?

Yes. The landscape and left-handed layouts are part of the InspectorData mobile app, included with every account at no extra charge.
