How Does Offline Photo Capture Work?
Three steps, and the middle one needs no network. Pick the job in coverage, shoot anywhere, reopen the app in signal.
Pair and Pick the Job
First run shows the pairing screen: tap Scan QR Code and follow "Scan the QR code on your dashboard," or sign in with your username or email and password. Then, while you still have signal, select the job. The app will not file a photo against a report it cannot verify.
Shoot With No Signal
In the crawlspace, the attic, a rural basement. Each shot is written straight to the phone with its comment, cover-photo flag and category tags, and appears in the Review grid instantly.
Reopen in Coverage
Back in signal with the app open, the queue moves on its own. The badge counts down, cards flip to synced as uploads land, and the app says plainly if anything is still stuck.
Why Inspectors Lose Photos in Dead Zones
The failure is rarely the camera. It is what happens between the shutter and the server.
Upload-First Apps
If a photo only exists once it reaches a server, a crawlspace with one bar is a data-loss event. InspectorData commits the image to the phone first; the upload is a separate job that can fail and retry without touching the original.
Tags and Comments Lost
Capturing pixels is the easy half. The queued record carries the report, timestamp, filename, cover-photo flag, your comment and the category tags, so the thinking you did under the house survives the trip out.
What the App Does While You Are Offline
Photos are stored on the phone before any upload is attempted, so the image exists independent of the network. Nothing you do in a dead zone depends on a request succeeding.
- Instant Review Grid - Captured photos render immediately from the copy stored on the phone, so you can review offline shots with no network. A card is marked synced only once the upload actually succeeds.
- Always-Visible Pending Count - The badge stays up while photos are un-uploaded and adapts its wording: uploading when you are online, pending (offline) when you are not.
What Happens When Signal Comes Back
Sync is deliberate, not hopeful. The app verifies the connection is real, uploads one photo at a time, and reports honestly if it cannot finish.
- Automatic On Reconnect - When the browser signals that the device is back online, the app flips its state, updates the status display and begins syncing. No tap required.
- Backoff With Jitter - Each photo gets up to 5 attempts, backing off from 1 second up to a 30-second ceiling, with randomised jitter on each delay so a returning tower is not hammered.
What Works Offline, and What Honestly Does Not
Every inspector finds the edge of an "it works offline" claim, usually at the worst moment. Here is where ours is, in advance.
Photo capture and review
- Opening the app with no signal, from the precached shell
- Shooting photos against a job you already selected
- Attaching a comment, cover-photo flag, and category and subcategory tags
- Reviewing everything you shot in the Review grid
Read this before you drive out
- Uploading runs in the foreground. Keep the app open while it finishes, or reopen it once you are back in coverage. Photos do not upload while the app is closed.
- Pick the job while online. The app refuses to save a photo unless a valid, already-selected report is verified against its cached list.
- The schedule is online-only. Open it in a dead zone and you get You're offline and "Reconnect to see your upcoming inspections."
- Phone storage is finite. If the device runs out you will see Phone storage full — sync now and free up space before taking more.
Manual Controls When You Want to Force It
Automatic sync is the default, but you can always push the queue yourself.
Upload Now
A "Sync Actions" card appears in Settings whenever the pending count is above zero, with a single Upload Now button. It stays hidden when nothing is waiting, so its presence alone tells you something is queued.
Upload All Photos Now
Under Settings › Photo Backup: ⬆️ Upload All Photos Now — "Sends every photo not yet on the server. Use this to finish an inspection." Make it your last step before leaving a property.
A Human on the Phone
If photos will not upload on a real job, call 612-457-1021. Photos still on the phone are recoverable; the app keeps them rather than quietly discarding them, and it refuses to unpair the device while any un-uploaded photo remains.
