What a chimney inspection covers

A chimney inspection follows NFPA 211 (Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances) and is graded into three levels:

  • Level 1 — readily accessible portions, no special tools, normal use of the system, no concerns flagged
  • Level 2 — Level 1 plus access to attic/basement portions and a video scan of the flue (typically used at sale or after an event like a chimney fire)
  • Level 3 — Level 2 plus removal of building components if needed (typically only when serious damage is suspected)

Standard report sections:

  • Exterior — crown, cap, brick condition, flashing
  • Interior — firebox, smoke chamber, damper, hearth
  • Flue — liner condition, creosote level, blockages
  • Clearances — combustible materials, insulation, structure
  • Recommendation — pass, sweep needed, repair, more inspection

Most home inspections include a Level 1 chimney check; standalone chimney inspections (especially Level 2) are common at sale and after damage events.

How InspectorData supports chimney inspections

Pick the inspection level. Walk the chimney inside and out. Photograph each finding. The AI categorizes photos by chimney element — crown, flashing, flue, firebox, hearth, damper.

Comment library covers:

  • Crown condition language (cracks, deterioration, sealed/unsealed)
  • Flashing language (counter-flashing, step flashing, condition)
  • Flue-liner language (clay tile, metal, gaps, cracks, creosote)
  • Creosote classification (Stage 1, 2, 3 per NFPA standards)
  • Firebox and damper assessment
  • Clearance compliance

Level 2 video scans upload like any other media — the platform stores the video and links it from the report.

Combined or standalone

Chimney often runs as part of a full home inspection. InspectorData's chimney section gets the appropriate detail level — Level 1 readily accessible visual for full inspections, Level 2 standalone for sale or post-event.

Why chimney inspectors switch software

Chimney specialists (CSIA-certified sweeps, certified chimney inspectors) often run their own businesses with sweep service combined with inspection. Generic home inspection software doesn't cover NFPA 211 levels, doesn't have creosote-stage language, and doesn't support video flue scans.

InspectorData's chimney template is built to NFPA 211 structure. Inspector picks the level, the report formats accordingly, and creosote-stage and clearance-compliance language is built in.

Frequently asked questions

Does it support Level 2 video scans?

Yes. Upload the video; the platform stores it and links from the report.

Does the comment library cover creosote stages?

Yes. Stage 1, 2, 3 per NFPA standards, with sweep recommendation language for each.

Can I document Level 1 / 2 / 3 differently?

Yes. Each level has its own template structure — the inspector picks the level and the report formats accordingly.

Does it integrate with a sweep service business?

Yes. CSIA-certified sweeps using InspectorData often combine sweep service tracking with inspection reporting in one client record.

Will the report meet insurance carrier requirements after a chimney fire?

Reports following NFPA 211 Level 2 structure (which is what insurers expect after fire damage) are accepted by major carriers.

Does it document clearances?

Yes. Clearance to combustibles is a dedicated section with photo placement and recommendation language.

Can I do a combined home + chimney inspection?

Yes. One inspection, one client. Chimney appears as its own section or as a separate PDF.
