If you've used the InspectorData mobile camera app for the last six months, you already know it's the offline-first inspection tool that doesn't lose your work in a basement. With v4, we doubled down on the things inspectors said were too slow — and added five new features competitors don't have at all.
This is a real-world rundown, not marketing copy. We'll be specific about what each feature does, where it lives in the app, and the actual time savings.
What's New in v4 — The Headline List
Nine new features, organized by what type of inspector they help most:
For inspectors fighting weak signal
1Better offline mode
A clear red banner at the top of the screen now slides in the moment connection drops: "You're offline — photos saving locally and will upload when you're back online." Sync buttons fade to gray. When connection returns, a green toast confirms: "Back online — uploading queued photos." No more wondering if your photos actually saved. Full offline mode breakdown →
2Per-photo retry/skip buttons
When a photo fails to upload — bad signal, server hiccup, anything — the app used to silently retry forever. Now failed photos show a green Retry and red Skip button overlay. Tap Retry to re-attempt manually. Tap Skip to abandon the upload (the local photo stays in the queue but stops being retried).
3Persistent storage for iOS
iOS will purge the browser's IndexedDB overnight if it thinks the app isn't being used. We now request navigator.storage.persist() on first launch — iOS honors this for installed PWAs. Photos queued at 6 PM are still there at 9 AM the next morning.
For inspectors who hate tapping
4Voice quick-button on the capture row
Tap the new mic icon between REPORT and the white pen, talk, stop talking for two seconds, and the comment is queued for your next photo. No modal. No confirm. The button glows red while recording and turns green with a small dot when comment is queued. Re-tap to re-record. More on voice-to-text in inspections →
5Bulk category assignment
The single biggest time saver in v4. Tap the new Select button at the top of the Review screen, tap multiple photos to select them, tap Assign Category. Pick the category once. Every selected photo gets tagged in seconds. Full breakdown of bulk categorization →
6Photo sort options in Review
Sort dropdown above the photo grid: Newest first / Oldest first / By category / By upload status / By bucket. Choice persists between sessions. Useful when reviewing 100+ photo inspections.
7Long-press to delete
Hold any photo in the Review screen for ~half a second. Confirm dialog. Photo deleted. Faster than tapping the X icon when you have many photos to clean up.
For inspectors switching templates mid-job
8Template switch warning
Picked the wrong template at the start of an inspection? Tap the template name in Settings to change it. v4 now shows a clear red warning explaining that switching templates will reset photo categories. Photos themselves are kept; only their category labels reset.
For inspectors who hate slow uploads on cellular
9Heavy compression toggle
Photos now cap at 960px on the longest side at 75% JPEG quality, cutting average file size from ~250KB to ~150KB — about 40% smaller. Faster uploads on weak signal, less data charge, less server storage. There's a toggle in Settings for inspectors who need full resolution for legal evidence cases.
Bonus — Total Taken Counter Now Persists
Smaller fix but inspectors asked for this for months. The "Total Taken" counter in Settings now tracks per-report shutter clicks across reopens, so you always know how many photos you've shot for the current property even if you closed the app between visits.
What Didn't Make v4
We had a longer wish list. Three things we deliberately deferred:
- Video recording in the inspection app. Competitors offer it. We've decided to ship it as v5 instead of cramming it into v4. Storage and upload bandwidth are real concerns; we're testing the right size limits before launch.
- Voice-to-text directly inside the comment library modal. Already exists — we did NOT change the existing pencil/library/dictate flow. The new mic button on the capture row is a parallel shortcut for fast cases.
- Real-time desktop sync. Photos still appear on desktop once they upload, just not the instant you take them. That's a desktop-side change rather than a mobile app change, queued for a separate update.
How to Get v4
If you're already an InspectorData user, v4 is rolling out to all accounts as of today. The mobile app updates itself the next time you open it (give it a minute on the first load — the service worker is replacing cached assets). New users get v4 automatically.
You'll know you're on v4 by the version label in Settings: v4.0.0.x | May 2026.
Compatibility Notes
- iOS: Safari 16+ recommended. Voice-to-text uses the native iOS speech engine.
- Android: Chrome 90+. Voice-to-text uses Google's speech recognition.
- Existing photos and reports: Untouched. No migration needed.
- Existing templates: Untouched.
- Existing user accounts: No re-login required.
What's Coming in v5
We're not promising dates, but the v5 roadmap is in active design now:
- Video recording (with capped clip length and aggressive compression)
- Real-time desktop sync (photos appearing on desktop the instant the inspector takes them)
- Photo crop and rotate before upload
- Multi-photo combine into one comment
- Pinch-to-zoom in Review
